‘It’s What We Deserve’ came to me when I was figuring out what the title of this zine should be. The ‘We’ refers to marginalized peoples that are often drowned out by white saviors in conversations about environmental issues and climate change. It also refers to the millions of Black and Brown people, especially women that have suffered from the unforgiving nature of the fashion/textile industry. These people, whose labor we hardly consider while we shop for clothes every season. The communities that have been destroyed were viewed as mere obstacles to corporations’ insatiable craving for endless profit. Regardless, this zine is designed to give back to those who have been taken from for too long; especially the Black community. Trends, styles, and inspiration have been taken from Black people while receiving little to no recognition. Cultures have been tokenized and white-washed to the point of the meaning and history behind a certain style are almost unrecognizable; just for it to be palatable to the general audience. ‘It’s What We Deserve’ seeks to reclaim what has been taken, and give back to communities in the form of education and empowerment. To uplift Black voices when speaking on Environmental Justice, and to provide a platform for Black-owned businesses and clothing brands that are working towards sustainability. Liberation for Black people is liberation for all. As much as this zine is an art piece, it is also a voice for activism, seeking to prove the intersectional connections between race, gender, and environmentalism. Because, frankly, It is What We Deserve.

To the delight of many of his fans, A.S. Program Board announced that singer, songwriter, and rapper Roy Blair will be performing some of his hit songs in the Hub at UCSB on Oct. 11. Despite his contributions to famous indie boy band BROCKHAMPTON’s album as a songwriter and producer, Blair’s solo work as an artist is rarely acknowledged; thus, this performance served as a rare musical treat for UCSB students and fans of his music.
